Dallas Cowboysπ

When it comes to professional athletic teams, some would agree that there is no other franchise quite like the Dallas Cowboys, which carries the same level of prominence or influence in the world of sports. If you step into any city or state throughout the United States, or perhaps you decide to take a brief trip overseas, you will quickly come to the realization that there are very few people who wouldn’t be able to recognize the blue and silver star logo. This particular logo can certainly be viewed as polarizing in many people’s eyes which can easily lead into verbal spats to occur between other sports fans. On the contrast this logo can also attract the strongest bonds to develop between strangers who share the same level of affection, and devotion to “America’s team”. One thing can be certain is that this logo also represents hope, not only for today, but for tomorrow. The hope that just maybe one day the Dallas Cowboys can return to a place where the world recognizes them as Super Bowl champions. The days of Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and Troy Aikman are long gone, and the road ever since the glory days has been disappointing, heartbreaking, and filled with uncertainty. However, the story of Jerry Wayne Jones Sr will forever be told as a man who was a true innovator, and had the guts to risk it all for a chance at generational wealth, success, and a heroic legacy. In closing, as the final days of Jerry Jones known as the official General Manager, and owner begin to dwindle away, there is one last question that lays in the middle of that shiny blue and silver logo. Will Jerry be able to put together a coaching staff, and roster suitable to hoist another Lombardi Trophy?

San Antonio Spursπ

Almost every NBA franchise struggles at some point throughout their teams history. Whether it may be struggling to make the playoffs, or struggling to reach the conference finals, or struggling to accomplish what very few teams have done, and that’s win an NBA championship. With that being said, prior to the year 1999, the Spurs had a difficult stretch where they just couldn’t get past the Western Conference. While the Spurs had an all star center by the name of David Robinson who was surrounded by an excellent supporting cast of team members like Sean Elliott, Avery Johnson, and Vinny Del Negro, they still couldn’t compete with teams such as the Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, and at the time the Seattle Supersonics. However, things began to change in 1996 when the San Antonio Spurs hired Gregg Popovich as their head coach, which in turn drafted a gentleman by the name of Tim Duncan in 1997. From that point on the NBA was on notice, and the Spurs were becoming a force to be reckon with. After winning their first championship against the New York Knicks in 1999, the Spurs would continue their illustrious championship legacy by defeating the New Jersey Nets in game 6 of the NBA Finals in 2003. This particular championship run had a different feel to it due to the significant roster upgrade. From top to bottom, the San Antonio Spurs had zero weak links on their roster. If you were looking for a 3 point specialist they had Manu GinΓ³bili, Steve Kerr, Steve Smith, and Danny Ferry. They also had a gifted point guard by the name of Tony Parker who made sure that Tim Duncan received the basketball in the post where he was nearly unstoppable. On the defensive side of the ball they had Bruce Bowen who wouldn’t allow opposing players to breathe, not to mention the elderly leadership that came off the bench, Kevin Willis and the ageing “Admiral”. Two years later in 2005, the Spurs found themselves back in the NBA Finals against the Detroit Pistons. The Spurs-Pistons series would be pushed to 7 games, but they undoubtedly would come out victorious by beating the Pistons 81-74 to win their 3rd NBA Championship. Just as consistent as Tim Duncan’s patented off the glass jump shot was, the Spurs would consistently reach the NBA Finals. This time in 2007 where the Spurs pulled out the brooms and swept a young 22 year-old LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to win their 4th ring. In 2011 the Spurs didn’t win the championship, but they definitely won the war by drafting superstar Kawhi Leonard number 15 in the NBA draft. As the brilliant basketball career of Tim Duncan began to fade, Kawhi Leonard was right there to emerge as the new two way player the Spurs desperately needed to continue their championship legacy. The draft pick in 2011 would pay out in dividends as the Spurs would go on to easily defeat the Miami Heat in the 2014 NBA Finals and take home their 5th ring. Although Coach Pop may be perceived as a man with very few words at least towards the media, the Spurs are unfortunately attached to an unfair public misconception for being a “boring” team. Nonetheless, the San Antonio Spurs underneath the counsel and wisdom of Gregg Popovich will forever be tied to an organization with class, integrity, and the unselfish mentality that team basketball comes before individuality.

HOUSTON ROCKETS π

It’s the year 1994, which means Michael is not around, and the main topic of discussion around the NBA is who’s going to be able to take the crown away from the Jordanless Bulls? Time and time again the New York Knicks would run into a cement wall, and in 1994 the concrete wall was officially retired, which allowed Patrick Ewing and the New York Knicks a clear pathway into the NBA Finals. The hard nose defensive Knicks team led by a no nonsense head coach named Pat Riley would unfortunately play the Houston Rockets in the finals. The Houston Rockets extraordinary success revolved around one of the greatest centers of all time, Hakeem Olajuwon. Although Hakeem was the main center piece of the Rockets, the talented group of players that surrounded him certainly launched the Rockets into championship status. On June 17th 1994 the NBA Final series was tied 2-2, and the Knicks had the advantage since game 5 was being played on their home court at Madison Square Garden. Midway through the 2nd quarter there was a huge distraction that was felt around the arena as Orenthal James Simpson (OJ) was fleeing from the police on the freeway in a white Bronco. The media coverage was being shown live on the jumbotron throughout the game at Madison Square Garden. Nonetheless, the Knicks were able to remain focus and pull out a monumental victory to lead the NBA Final series 3-2. Now that the Knicks were in full control of the NBA Finals and officially one game away from winning the championship, they would have to pull it together to win on the Rockets home floor in order to bring back an NBA championship to the city of New York. Game 6 of the NBA Finals came and went, and the Knicks lost their opportunity at winning their first championship since 1973. All the pressure was now on the line at Summit Arena where the Knicks and Rockets would play a deciding Game 7. This particular game would end up going back and forth right into the final minutes of the 4th quarter where John Starks failed to connect on numerous three point opportunities. The Rockets would eventually pull away to win their first NBA Championship for the city of Houston. What a way to cap off an NBA season, but can the Rockets do it again in 1995? Not only did the Rockets make it back to the NBA Finals the following year, they emphatically dominated the Orlando Magic, and swept away the young Penny Hardaway, and Shaquille O’Neal 4 games to zero. As Mario Ellie shot 3 pointers all over Summit Arena, he also blew dagger kisses to the fans of Houston to celebrate their back to back NBA championship. While the Houston Rockets players celebrated with their family, friends, and fans, Coach Rudy Tomjanovich made a legendary closing line to his historic speech which he stated “don’t ever underestimate the heart of a champion.”

Dallas Mavericks π

Before Marc Cuban was the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, the Mavs logo represented and portrayed a cowboy hat on the right tip of a letter M. They were also referred to as the triple J’s due to the fact that Mavericks had 3 superstar athletes all with their first names beginning with the letter J. For instance the three J’s consisted of Jamal Mashburn, Jimmy Jackson, and one of the most prolific point guards ever to bounce a ball in the NBA, Jason Kidd. Although this Mavericks team wouldn’t come close to winning a championship in the 90’s, but like anything in life things can change. In 2011 the Mavericks led by Dirk Nowitzki easily defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games to punch their 2nd ticket to the NBA Finals. The last time the Mavericks were in the finals was 2006 against the Miami Heat where they led the series 2-0 before the fearless Dwyane Wade took over and the stolen the series right from the Mavericks hands. The Mavericks would lose the next 4 straight games leaving the entire team and the city of Dallas wondering what just happened. This time around in 2011 the Mavericks were going against a far more superior Miami Heat team than the last roster they went up against in 2006. Replace an ageing Alonzo Mourning with a fresh Chris Bosh, exchange a slow and tired Shaquille O’Neal with a quick and strong LeBron James, and remove a young D Wade with a wise and mature Dwyane Wade who knew how to win championships. The heat would start off the series running the floor at a fast paced to see if the Mavericks could keep up. It was obvious the Mavs were not as athletic as the Miami Heat which caused the Heat to go up 1-0 in the NBA Finals. However, game 2 was a different story as the Mavericks dug down deep and pulled out a victory on the road to tie the series 1-1. Game 3 would return back to Dallas with a possiblilty that the Mavericks could take full control of the final series. Unfortunately, for the Mavericks the Miami Heat would be able to rise the occasion in game 3 and win a nail biter on the road. After this particular game the series shifted for some odd reason. Maybe this occured because the Miami Heat were behaving over confident, or did the Heat underestimate the Dallas Mavericks which caused the Mavs fans and the rest of the world to jump on their bandwagon and root for the underdog. The energy shift caused Lebron James to miss shots down the stretch that he normally would make on any other night. Was the weight and pressure of the NBA Finals becoming too much for Miami Heat? It also would cause players on the Heat team to turn over the ball in crucial moments of the game and place Dallas in a commanding 3-2 series lead. Game 6 would return back to South Beach, and it was officially time to put up or shut up for the Heat. Everyone around the NBA circles assumed the Heat would get it together in the final 2 games of the NBA Finals to win the championship, but the unexpected happened. The Dallas Mavericks walked onto the Heats home court and walked out NBA champions defeating the high powered Heat 105-95. All the hard work Jason Kidd put in throughout his NBA career finally paid off as the Mavs won their first NBA championship.
